A cause has not been determined for a Sunday morning fire that damaged a Leonard Road home. The two-alarm fire occurred at 920 Leonard Road around 8:19 a.m. The homeowners, an elderly couple, were not able to get out on their own and fire personnel had to help them get out, said Lt. Jason Everhart.

Everhart, a firefighter with Millers Ferry, said the pair called in the fire themselves. He did not say if they were affected by the smoke, but they were not taken to the hospital. When firefighters arrived there was heavy smoke coming from the back of the home.

The smoke was contained to three rooms inside the home with smoke damage throughout the home. Everhart declined to say the extent of the damage. The fire was under control by 9:30 a.m.

In addition to Millers Ferry Fire Department, Union, Spencer, and Churchland fire departments responded. Rowan County EMS and Rowan County Rescue Squad also responded. The Rowan County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
