Country must not doze through wake up calls

Wake up. Waking up means; rousing up, opening one’s eye, getting up and starting over. I wonder if the events of the last six years have been sent as a wake up call for citizens. During the first two years, the “Big Stick” principle was used to push through legislation that a majority did not want. In the words of Jonathan Gruber, an architect of the Affordable Care Act, the law passed   because of the “stupidity of the American voter.” Wow! Could this be a wake up call for you and me, or do we continue under the delusion that it will all work out?

We have a problem that eats away at our freedoms. Judges should adjudicate on the premise of the Constitution and past findings of the courts. This seems to be a foreign principle to some. Citizens make our wishes known by electoral process, and the judges deem that we are too naive to know what is right. Should we, as a unified people, see this as a wake up call?

I’m fortunate to be a part of a local Camp Meeting Association. Some years ago the Camp was at a low point, barely making the bills and attendance had fallen. A charismatic man came along with a deal to keep the camp solvent. He said, “Give me the camp and I will remake it, changing it for the better. ….Your group can still come and have camp meetings, but we will take care of everything else.” We didn’t go for that, but we are very thankful for him. That wake up call has made our Camp Meeting stronger than ever.

We Americans need these present times to give us a wake up call, to open our eyes. Americans are the greatest people in the world, I know we have the potential for even greater greatness.
