Business briefs: Alevo to start production at former Philip Morris plant in Concord

A big announcement is set for Tuesday at the former Philip Morris cigarette plant in Concord.

Alevo Inc., a battery-technology company, will open a 3.5 million-square-foot production facility at the plant and plans to create over 2,000 jobs in the next three years, according to a press release. •

The company’s leaders will speak, and Gov. Pat McCrory will be at the private launch event along with state Secretary of Commerce Sharon Decker.

The plant will make large battery systems that store energy.

Sweet Frog sales to support United Way on Tuesday

All day Tuesday, Sweet Frog yogurt at 912 E. Innes Street will donate a percentage of its sales to the Rowan County United Way. Be sure to tell the cashier you are supporting the United Way of Rowan County. The store is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Film and panel at Catawba College will focus on hunger in the U.S.

The Center for the Environment at Catawba College and Bread Riot will host a screening of “A Place at the Table” on Tuesday at the center facility on the Catawba campus. Bread Riot, a non-profit food advocacy organization, will offer a tasting of local foods at 6 p.m. before the movie, which begins at 6:45 p.m. A panel discussion will follow the movie, which focuses on hunger in the U.S. Register at www.centerfortheenvironment.org.

Delhaize America
names new CIO

Delhaize America has announced that Michael Laurenti will join the company as chief information officer and a member of the Delhaize America Leadership Team on Nov. 17, Laurenti previously served as CIO for Belk Department Stores.

As CIO, Laurenti will have responsibility for all Information Technology and Information Security operations, which support the company’s millions of customers, 100,000 associates and 1,300 stores.

He succeeds Deb Dixson, who announced her retirement earlier this year.

Cabarrus Chamber of Commerce event will talk about health care

Community leaders and business professionals will convene at Great Wolf Lodge in Concord Nov. 6, from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to discuss health care. Local experts will explore topics addressing public health reform, access and managing costs, lifestyle/prevention, and the global perspective. Real estate groups meets Tuesday at China Buffet

The Rowan Real Estate Investors and Associates will meet Tuesday at China Buffet in Salisbury at 7 p.m. This month the guest speaker is Whitney Brennan from IPX Investment Property Exchange. She will talk about 1031 Exchange Services.

The group meets regularly on the fourth Tuesday of each month. The meeting is open to anyone who would like to attend. China Buffet is on Arlington street behind O’Charleys.

Salisbury resident wins silver medal at national tinting competition

Donnie Burris, an installer at Pro-Tint Inc. in Salisbury, won the silver medal in the Architectural Division at the International Window Film Tint-Off, held in early October in Baltimore, Md. Burris won a $2,500 cash prize..

Burris competed against 25 other contestants in a competition where each contestant applied film to a mock architectural frame system.

Burris, 36, has 14 years of experience in the industry. This was his first year competing in the Tint-Off.
