DETROIT (AP) — Andrew Susac hit a two-run double in San Francisco’s four-run first against David Price, and the Giants beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 on Saturday.
Buster Posey had a solo homer among his three hits as San Francisco won for the eighth time in nine games against Detroit, including a sweep of the 2012 World Series. Madison Bumgarner pitched six innings for his fourth consecutive win, giving him a career-high 17 on the year.
Miguel Cabrera homered twice for Detroit, which has dropped three of four. Victor Martinez hit a solo drive in the third for his career-best 30th homer.
Price (13-11) settled down after the rough start, striking out 11 in 8 2-3 innings. But the left-hander, who was acquired from Tampa Bay in a July 31 trade, dropped to 1-3 with a 4.91 ERA in his last four starts.
Bumgarner (17-9), who won Game 2 two years ago, allowed three runs and 10 hits. Santiago Casilla pitched the ninth for his 15th save.
Yankees 6, Royals 2
NEW YORK (AP) — Brandon McCarthy won for the second time in six starts, and the Yankees feasted on Kansas City’s bullpen after Royals starter Danny Duffy left because of an injury following his first pitch.
A night after a 1-0 loss in the series opener dropped them 41/2 games back for the AL’s second wild card, the weak-hitting Yankees scored as many as six runs for the first time since Aug. 29.
McCarthy (6-4) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings.
Kansas City, which had won four in a row, remained two games ahead of Detroit in the AL Central.
Duffy threw a ball to Jacoby Ellsbury and walked around the mound in discomfort, causing catcher Salvador Perez to motion toward Kansas City’s dugout. He was relieved by Liam Hendriks (1-1), who pitched four innings.
Athletics 4, Astros 3
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Jed Lowrie hit a game-ending RBI single in Oakland’s three-run ninth inning.
Lowrie, Josh Reddick and Coco Crisp had two hits apiece as Oakland snapped a three-game losing streak. The Athletics were six games back of the AL West-leading Angels coming into the day, but were also on top of the wild-card standings.
Reddick hit a two-run double off Chad Qualls (1-5) before Lowrie drove him in with a single to left. Oakland is hitting .571 (16 for 28) against Qualls this year.
Luke Gregerson (4-3) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.
Pirates 5, Cubs 3, 11 innings
CHICAGO (AP) — Josh Harrison hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the 11th inning, and Pittsburgh got the win in the conclusion of Friday’s series opener that was suspended due to rain.
Harrison finished with four hits and two RBIs, but the All-Star infielder hurt his left ankle while making an over-the shoulder catch in short center field in the bottom of the 11th.
Pittsburgh, which snapped a four-game losing streak, said Harrison was receiving treatment for discomfort in his ankle and his status would be determined after the second game.
Wesley Wright (0-3), the last of nine Cubs pitchers, got the loss. Chicago had won six in a row at Wrigley Field.
