Salisbury’s girls tennis team hasn’t lost a match against a Rowan opponent since 2001 when the Hornets fell to West Rowan.
Salisbury won 9-0 at home against East Rowan on Wednesday.
Kayla Honeycutt, Kathryn Rusher, Grace Steinman, Maria Capito, Emily Capito and Julia Honeycutt rolled in singles, as the Hornets dropped no sets and only one game.
Kayla Honeycutt-Maria Capito, Rusher-Steinman and Emily Capito-Julia Honeycutt were the winning doubles teams. The Hornets (2-0) , the defending 2A state champs, lost only two games in doubles.
Salisbury fell to Concord 1-0 in its season opener on Wednesday.
Salisbury surrendered only three shots on frame but couldn’t completely hold off the potent attack of the visiting Spiders.
Salisbury got outstanding play from Christian Uribe, Jamie Henriquez, Joshua Lynch and Bryan Fragoso.
As the defending champ, Salisbury was ranked No. 1 in 2A in preseason, but the Hornets have a host of new faces.
“There is no question that we will have some adjustment struggles, especially early,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said. “We lost more than 90 percent of our scoring from last year and have eight new starters. It’s going to take some time to find our new identity, trust one another, and become comfortable in new roles and positions.”
The Hornets travel to 4A Lake Norman tonight for another challenging contest.

• Salisbury’s jayvees won’t play until Sept. 3 against Davie County.
Salisbury’s volleyball team will play West Stanly at home today (that’s a venue change from the original schedule) and will travel to to West Stanly nex week.
Kannapolis lost 8-5 to visiting Asheville on Wednesday.
Ryan McMahon hit a two-run homer in the second inning as the Tourists scored five runs and took control.
• A streak of four straight multi-hit games pushed the batting average of L.A. Dodgers prospect Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) to .354.
Seager is still in Double-A ball with Chattanooga.
• A two-hit game for Birmingham on Sunday pushed the batting average of Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) back over .200.
• K.C. Royals prospect Whit Merrifield (Davie) had a 5-for-5 game recently and is batting .357 in 64 games with Triple-A Omaha.
Rowan Little League is taking sign-ups through Aug. 24 at Godley’s Garden Center for fall baseball and girls softball.

Fall ball is for ages 3 to 14. Cost is $50. Baseball ages are as of April 30, 2015, and softball ages are as of Dec. 31, 2014.

Catawba’s women’s soccer team was picked fourth in the SAC’s preseason poll of league coaches.
Three Catawba players were named to the All-SAC first team.
Forward Mary Kirkman, who scored seven goals last season, made the first team. Midfielder Sophie Waller and defender Alex Hulsey are on the second team.
Wingate, No. 10 nationally in D-II, is the SAC favorite.
Catawba opens Sept. 5 against Armstrong in Savannah, GA.
