Ellis garners All-America accolades

Brittany Ellis of the Rowan Express Track and Field Club earned All-America honors at the Junior Olympic Games held in Des Moines, Iowa.

Ellis threw 51 feet. 11 inches in the 8-under javelin for fifth place. She was 10th in the shot put (16-11) and 15th in the long jump with a personal best of 10-1.

Brenden Ellis was 49th in the 5-under shot put with a throw of 7-11.

BreAsia Ellis competed in the 11-year-old javelin and discus. She was 18th in the javelin with a personal best of 44-11 and 21st in the discus with a throw of 43 feet.

Dylan Goodman (South Rowan, Pfeiffer) helped the Mooresville Spinners win the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League championship. Goodman scored 13 runs and drove in nine this season.

Hall of Fame ceremonies for the class of 2014 are Sunday, Aug. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Civic Center. Twelve new members will be inducted.

The Rowan Junior Open will be played Aug. 18 and 19.

The format is stroke play. The first round will be at Irish Creek and the final round will be Warrior.

The defending champion is Davis Richards.

Sixty-five players have registered and 96 will be accepted. Entries are open until Aug. 16. Entries are open to male and female amateurs who have not reached their 19th birthday by Aug. 19 and who have not started college.

• The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice last week.

The winning team was Mary Seaford, Gene Seaford, Randy Honeycutt and Don Goodnight. Harry Owens won closest to the pin. Gene Seaford won longest putt.

The McCanless Couples also played a Captain’s Choice Sunday.

The winning team was Ricky Honeycutt, Glenn Trexler and Tommy Reynolds.

Phyllis Myers won closet to the pin and longest putt.

Jacob Morris scored the winning run on a passed ball in the 10th inning as Kannapolis beat Hickory 5-4 on Monday.

Morris went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Intimidators (53-58).
