Rowan County’s first ever Dragon Boat Festival

The Rowan County Chamber of Commerce will present the inaugural Rowan Chamber Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Shrine Club on High Rock Lake (6480 Long Ferry Road).

Fast Facts
The Dragon Boat:
• The sport stems from an ancient Chinese legend
• Each Dragon Boat is 42 feet long
• 10 rows seat 20 paddlers
• A steersperson uses a 9-foot oar as a rudder, standing in the stern
• A drummer sits in a seat at the bow, facing the crew
Roster:
• 20 paddlers must be in the boat at all times
• 1 drummer
• 4 alternate paddlers

Race Day:
• Each team will race in 3 heats; there is no elimination
• The course is 350 meters in a straight line with 3 lanes
• Division winners will be awarded in a post-racing awards ceremony
