Election season is just around the corner, and filing for the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education begins this Friday.
Four seats are up for election.
Seat one represents the northern area of the county, including North Rowan elementary, middle and high schools, Hanford-Dole Elementary and Henderson Independent.
Chairman Dr. Richard Miller, who is completing his first term on the board, currently fills the seat.
When asked if he planned to run for re-election, Miller said, “I think so at this point.”
Seat two represents the county’s southern schools — South Rowan High School, Corriher-Lipe Middle School and China Grove, Enochville, Landis and Millbridge elementary schools.
L.A. Overcash holds seat two, and said he plans to run for re-election.
Overcash has served on the school board twice — once in the late ’90s and early 2000s, and again beginning two years ago when Mike Caskey gave up his seat to serve on the Rowan County Board of Commissioners.
Seat four covers the western area of the county, including West Rowan middle and high schools and Cleveland, Hurley, Mount Ulla and Woodleaf elementary schools.
Kay Wright Norman, who will complete her 20th year on the school board in December, represents western Rowan County schools. Norman currently serves as the board’s vice chair.
”At this point, I’m planning to (run again),” she said.
Seat six is a special area and is filled by Jean Kennedy. The seat has no district designation, and can be filled by someone who lives in any attendance zone in the county. Kennedy could not be reached for comment.
In each of the other districts, however, the seat can only be filled by a resident of the attendance zone for that specific area.
School board elections are non-partisan, and each seat appears separately on the ballot. Terms last for four years.
Filing begins Friday at noon, and runs through Aug. 15 at noon. The filing fee is $5.
Rowan County citizens can file to run for office at the Board of Elections office, 130 W. Innes Street in Salisbury.
The election will be held Nov. 4.
