The Salisbury Rotary Club awarded two $5,000 scholarships and seven $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors this spring.
Receiving $5,000 scholarships were Kody Heglar, a senior at Carson High who plans to study exercise science at Catawba College; and Maria Cruz, a Salisbury High senior who plans to study culinary arts at Livingstone College.
Receiving $1,000 scholarships to RCCC were Alexis Spencer, East Rowan; Daniel Brady, Carson High; Katelyn Parker, North Rowan; Michael Wetherford, Henderson; Shaniece Fortune, Salisbury; Leticia Bowles, South Rowan; and Baobai Lor, Early College.
The Salisbury Rotary Club began awarding scholarships to seniors graduating from public school in Rowan County in 1988. To date, the club has provided a total of $352,900 in scholarships.
Beginning in 2013 and continuing this year, the scholarship program was revised to have a more local flavor, awarding $1,000 scholarships to Rowan-Cabarrus Community College to a senior at each of the eight secondary schools in the Rowan-Salisbury School System. Additionally, the club started awarding two countywide scholarships of $5,000 each, one to Catawba and one to Livingstone.
