Full steam ahead in Spencer

SPENCER — It’s getting steamy at the N.C. Transportation Museum.
One of the stars of this weekend’s Streamliners at Spencer event is the Spirit of Roanoke. It’s one of 26 vintage locomotives in town for the train-lovers’ paradise, but the only steam-powered engine among its diesel counterparts. And it’s the one that will remain after the event ends Sunday.
The Class J 611 passenger steam locomotive is owned by the Virginia Museum of Transportation, which is having it restored in Spencer.
Streamliners at Spencer continues 8 a.m.-8 p.m. today with a nighttime photo shoot 9 p.m.-11:30 p.m. The Saturday edition will be the same daytime hours and nighttime photo shoot, and will feature a parade of streamliners. Sunday’s grand finale will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the locomotives will be displayed side-by-side.
