Honor goes to Connor

North Rowan senior Michael Connor was named CCC Player of the Year for boys basketball.
The award was announced shortly after North’s loss to Kinston in Saturday’s 2A state championship game.
A 1,000-point scorer, Connor was instrumental in North’s CCC co-regular season championship, CCC tournament championship, sectional championship and regional championship.
Lexington’s Devin Cross was runner-up for player of the year honors.
All-CCC players are North’s Connor, Michael Bowman and Jalen Sanders; Salisbury’s Corban Usry; Lexington’s Cross, Nolan Benson, Daniel Reid-Bennett and Shakeem Peterson; West Davidson’s Tyler Grooms and Zach Queen; Thomasville’s Cedric Green, and East Davidson’s Cody Bowers.
Lexington’s Jon Weavil was named CCC Coach of the Year. Lexington went 9-1 and shared the CCC regular-season title with North.
Girls
East Davidson’s Bailey Plummer was named CCC Player of the Year for girls basketball, and East Davidson’s Don Corry was named CCC Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Eagles to a 10-0 regular season.
North Rowan’s Nycieko Dixon and Demeria Robinson are All-CCC, along with Salisbury’s Monifa Angle; East Davidson’s Plummer, Lori Morgan, Jennifer Welborn and Madi Hallman; Lexington’s Alexis Fowler, Karrigan Ellison and Emerson Hayes, and Thomasville’s Christina Coleman and Jashana Thomas.
Fowler was runner-up for player of the year.
Catawba swept Anderson at Newman Park on Saturday and continues to climb back into the SAC race.
The Indians won 9-3 and 4-3. Paul Kronenfeld went 6-for-7 in the doubleheader.
The nightcap was decided in dramatic, walk-off fashion by a pinch-hit homer by Malachi Hanes.
Craig Brooks also homered in the second game. Ryan McClintock (3-0) was the winning pitcher in relief of Sean Grant.
T.J. Wharton homered in the opener for the Indians . John J. Tuttle (3-2), Shaefer Shepard and McClintock got the job done on the mound.Tuttle pitched six innings. Hanes had two hits.
Catawba (14-11, 9-5 SAC) hosts Mount Olive Tuesday.
Catawba swept Mars Hill in SAC action on Saturday.
The Indians won 4-0 and 6-0.
Catawba (17-6, 2-0) got a two-run homer from Morgan Brann in the opener. Carley Tysinger struck out eight and pitched a four-hitter. It was her third shutout of the season.
Emily B, Huneycutt was the winner in the second game, and Katie Smith earned a save.
Gina Gerone had a two-run single in the nightcap.
GRU Augusta won 86-84 against Anderson in a first-round regional game played in Aiken, S.C., on Saturday.
Devon Wright-Wilson scored with five seconds left to give the Jaguars the win.
K.J. Sherrill (West Rowan) scored eight points, while Keshun Sherrill (West) had five.
C.J. Gleaton led Anderson with 24 points.
GRU Augusta plays again today at 7:30 against USC-Aiken.
Lincoln Memorial beat Carson-Newman 76-65 on Saturday.
