Roco wrestlers move on to Saturday

In the 3A wrestling state championships in Greensboro, South’s Logan Durham (106), East’s Shiheem Saunders (170) and Carson’s Alex Lyles (Carson) won by pin in Friday’s quarterfinal matches, while South’s Tyler Hall (126), East’s Wyatt Blume (152) and Carson’s Brandon Sloop won decisions in the quarterfinals.
Those six wrestlers advanced to the semifinals.
In the semis, Durham won a 14-2 decision against Jackonsville’s Blaine Metz. Durham (30-0) will wrestle Weddington’s Parker Walton (51-1) in today’s championship. Walton’s only loss was to Durham in the regional.
Hall lost a 4-3 decision in the semifinals against Morehead’s Mike Jones. Hall (28-4) is still alive in the consolations.
Blume won a 6-3 decision against Zacharias Fincannon of St. Stephens in the semifinals. Blume (45-7) will wrestle Southern Guilford’s Drake Patrum today for the championship.
Sloop (43-6) lost a 4-2 overtime decision in the semifinals to Jacoby Benjamin of Southern Nash. Sloop is still alive in the consolations.
Saunders (45-4) won by pin in the semifinals against Fred T Foard’s Tate Blanton. Saunders will wrestle Orange’s David Peters-Logue today for the championship.
Carson’s Alex Lyles (31-2) won a 5-4 decision against Pisgah’s Cody Lamb in the semifinals. Lyles will wrestle Topsail’s Joseph Sculthorpe for the championship today.
• Also in 3A, East’s Sam Cornacchione (106) and West’s Thomas Current (West) won matches in the consolation bracket on Friday but have been eliminated. East’s Max Wall (160) and West’s Zac Ridenhour (138) also have been eliminated.
• In 2A, Salisbury’s J.C. Burton (182) lost in the quarterfinals but won his first consolation match.
North Rowan’s Jaleel Hitchens (138) and Braxton Rabon (160) were eliminated on Friday.
• In 4A, A.L. Brown’s Nicholas Sexton (126) won his quarterfinal match Friday but lost in the semifinals.
Keechan Ware (220), Avery Clinding (120) and Jayquon McEntyre (106) lost in the quarterfinals and were eliminated in consolations. Isaiah Johnson (138) won a consolation match but was eliminated on Friday.
• Davie’s Alex Gobble (182) won his quarterfinal and semifinal matches, but War Eagles Parker Correll (220) and Jack Robertson (195) were eliminated on Friday.
Gobble (48-1) will wrestle South View’s Malik McDonald today for the championship.
