Sacred Heart middle school students advance to history bee regionals

Sacred Heart Catholic School middle school students Emilee Hibshman, Elly Burks, Johnson Huynh and Eric Turnbull took the online National History Bee Exam and qualified to advance to the regional finals in Charlotte. Turnbull’s regional scores during the Feb. 10 testing qualified him to advance to the National History Bee finals in June in Atlanta.
Founded in 2010, the National History Bee is getting set for its fourth school year of high school regional and state qualifying tournaments, leading to the National Championships in Washington, D.C. and Arlington, Va., in the spring. National History Bee offers separate divisions for elementary and middle school students. The elementary and middle school division features an intramural bee and an online qualifying test before its 35-40 separate regional tournaments take place.
Eighth-grader Elly Burks represented SHCS with a win at the 2013-2014 Junior National Beta Club Convention in Greensboro on Feb. 3-4. She was the N.C. Junior Spelling Contest Champion and received recognition and a plaque during the final awards ceremony.
