The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will meet Monday to settle several issues put off during their Jan. 27 meeting and for their book study.
During its last meeting, the board tabled a petition from the North Carolina Association of Educators regarding legislation that requires school boards to offer four-year contracts to 25 percent of teachers in the district in an effort to phase out tenure for teachers.
The board felt it needed to have a better understanding of the legislation before deciding whether or not to sign the petition. The board has consulted lawyers, human resources and the school system’s chief financial officer.
“We have to have a starting place and that is to understand the law,” said Vice Chairwoman Kay Wright Norman.
The board plans to address the issue again at Monday’s meeting.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Operations Nathan Currie, the board’s legal counsel is currently reviewing the school system’s field trip policies in response to concerns that the board had over Salisbury High School’s AP Environmental Science Class’ proposed trip to Emerald Isle.
The board will look at these policies and at the proposed trip in more detail.
Currie will also present the memorandum of agreement for school resource officers back to the board with the minor changes they suggested.
The board has a closed session on the agenda, but Norman said she did not think the board’s mediation attorney Richard Schwartz will be in attendance.
The board meets Monday at 5 p.m. at the school system administrative offices, 110 S. Long St. in East Spencer.
