Area athletes update …
Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) scored a career-high 21 points on Saturday to lead GRU Augusta to a 97-84 Peach Belt Conference win at ninth-ranked USC Aiken. It was the first home loss for USC Aiken this season.
Keshun’s big brother, K.J. Sherrill (West), scored 20 for the Jaguars. K.J. has scored in double figures seven games in a row.
• Brevard’s Darius Moose (Carson) had 16 points, five rebounds and five assists in Saturday’s 60-59 SAC loss to Lenoir-Rhyne.
• Isaiah Cuthbertson (West) enjoyed another big game for Mars Hill in Saturday’s 79-73 loss to Wingate.
Cuthbertson scored 21 points on 10-for-13 shooting and added six rebounds.
• Nick Houston (Carson) made two 3-pointers and scored 10 points for Catawba in Saturday’s overtime loss to Carson-Newman.

Women’s basketball
Ayana Avery (West) scored 18 points and led Radford to a 60-57 Big South win against Charleston Southern on Saturday. Avery stayed hot from long range. She was 4-for-6 on 3-pointers.
• Doreen Richardson (Salisbury) scored 15 points for Gardner-Webb in a 76-53 win against UNC Asheville on Saturday. Jessica Heilig (Salisbury) added eight points and four rebounds for the Bulldogs.
• Alison Sobataka (West) celebrated a birthday Saturday and scored 12 points for Columbia in a 91-79 loss to Milligan.
• Temple’s Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury) had eight points and 13 rebounds in an 85-75 loss to SMU. Against No. 1 UConn earlier in the week, Shipp did well. She had nine points and four steals.
• Charlotte’s Ayanna Holmes (Salisbury) had seven points and eight rebounds in a 71-62 loss to East Carolina on Saturday.
• Amy Steller (Davie) scored five points for Pfeiffer in a 74-62 win against Lees-McRae on Saturday. Lauren Lewis, who started her college career at Catawba, led Lees-McRae with 22 points.

College baseball
Dylan Goodman (South Rowan) started in left field for Pfeiffer in a 9-4 opening-day win against Mars Hill on Saturday. Goodman went 1-for-3 and scored three runs.
• Catawba second baseman Julio Zubillaga (Carson) went 5-for-6 on opening day, but the Indians lost a doubleheader to Lynn 7-2 and 5-4. Zubillaga’s hits included a triple.
John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown) pitched six innings and struck out four but took an opening-day loss for Catawba.
• Brett Huffman (West) was 3-for-7 on opening day as UNC Pembroke swept Anderson in a doubleheader. The senior first baseman drove in two runs.
• Catawba transfer Matt Laurens (North Rowan) pitched on opening day for North Greenville against Lenoir-Rhyne and took a loss in a 3-1 game. The teams split a doubleheader.
Infielder Chase Hathock (East Rowan) is on the L-R roster.
• Forrest Buchanan (Salisbury) pitched in relief for Belmont Abbey in a 10-1 loss to Lander. Buchanan hurled 2 1/3 innings. He allowed four walks but only one hit and no runs.
• Nathan Fulbright (East) had two hits, including an RBI double, in Guilford’s 4-2 loss to Piedmont on opening day.

College softball
UNC Greensboro’s freshman outfielder Sidney Grkman (Carson) underwent shoulder surgery last week.
• The season begins on Tuesday for Belmont Abbey’s Rowan contingent — infielder Kaitlyn Jones (South Rowan), catcher Katherine Starnes (South) and pitcher Samantha Jacobs (North).
• Pfeiffer, which has freshmen Sydney Poole (East Rowan) and Allyson Mills (East) on the roster, opens Tuesday at Winston-Salem State.

College gymnastics
N.C. State’s Courtney Bisbe (Carson) placed third on the uneven parallel bars in Saturday’s meet against Missouri with a score of 9.80.

College track and field
Western Carolina’s Alisha Bradshaw (Salisbury) placed second in the shot put (46 feet, 3/4 inches) in the Bob Pollock Classic at Clemson. Bradshaw was fifth in the weight throw (58-2 1/2).
Western’s Keith Leonard (East) cleared 14-9 in the pole vault for fifth place.
• Christa Landy (West) ran on North Carolina Central’s women’s 4×400 relay team that ran a time of 3:59.96 for seventh place in Hilton Garden Invitational in Winston-Salem.
• Lees McRae’s Evan Webb (East) cleared 15 feet, 1 inch for ninth place in the Hilton Garden Invitational.
Lees-McRae’s Cody McNeely (West) ran on a 4×400 relay team that was 26th in 3:38.85.
• Omar Ray (A.L. Brown) ran on the Wingate 4×400 team that broke the school recod at the Hilton Garden Invitational with a clocking of 3:23.91.
