Cars in ‘Yesterday’ photograph suggest a later date

Thanks to some local car enthusiasts and further research by local movie buff Mike Cline, the Post concludes the “Yesterday” photograph appearing in Monday’s edition of the Post (page 2A) was from Nov. 1 or 2, 1940, instead of May 22-24, 1939.
The car experts called to say there are some 1940 and 1941 model cars in the photo, which showed a parking enforcement officer making his rounds on South Main Street. The Victory Theatre movie marquee behind him showed that Tyrone Power’s “Jesse James” was showing at the time.
Though the first release of “Jesse James” came in 1939 and appeared at Salisbury’s Victory Theatre in May of the same year, Cline’s records also show “Jesse James” coming back to the Victory Nov. 1-2, 1940, which would explain the 1940 and 1941 cars, especially if the 1941 models were released that fall.
The officer’s uniform looks more fitting for November than May, too. The Post thanks everyone who called in and Cline for his help in finding the later dates for “Jesse James.”
