SPENCER — Members of the Spencer Fire Department and the Elizabeth Hanford Dole Chapter of the American Red Cross in Salisbury teamed up Jan. 20 for a community outreach and education program.
The group visited local housing units throughout Spencer to provide information regarding fire safety, disaster safety and disaster preparedness.
They also collected information about residents who may require special attention in the event of an emergency or disaster.
Red Cross liaison Monica Bruns assisted the fire department, as well as many volunteers.
As a result of team’s efforts, the campaign was able to reach out to about 115 Spencer residents.
The Spencer Fire Department, organized in 1901, is comprised of 26 volunteer and part-time personnel. The department serves the 2.3-square-mile area of Spencer and answered a total of 530 calls in 2013.
The Spencer Fire Department shares mutual aid agreements with neighboring cities and districts within Rowan and Davidson Counties.
