Animal advocates to hold rally today

SALISBURY — Animal advocates who held a downtown rally in November plan to gather again today outside the building where the Rowan County Board of Commissioners will meet.
Laura Ashley, a member of the Fix Rowan Advocacy Group, says the rally will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Commissioners meet at 6 p.m. in the Rowan County Administrative Office Building at 130 W. Innes St.
The group has been urging commissioners to end the Rowan County Animal Shelter’s use of carbon monoxide to kill cats and dogs that are not adopted. Cabarrus and Iredell counties removed their gas chambers earlier this year. About a dozen of the state’s 100 counties continue to use gas.
Rowan commissioners have cited the safety of Animal Control employees as the reason to stick with gassing animals instead of administering each one with a lethal injection.
