SALISBURY — Hundreds turned out for the 28th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast today, where Wilson Cherry of Rowan Vocational Opportunities delivered the keynote address.
“We must give our children the tools and the equipment to succeed, the encouragement and mentorship and guidance to go out in the modern world and be successful,” said Cherry, a native of Salisbury and graduate of Catawba College. “But we also must give our children the things necessary so not only do they fly but they soar, because we have come this far by faith.”
The theme for the city’s four-day King celebration, which included a parade, memorial service and awards program, was “Achieving Equality Through Education.”
Students from Livingstone College and North Rowan High School, as well as the 100 Men in Black choir, provided entertainment.
