Salisbury Academy fifth-grade student Thomas Bristol received the recognition of high honors in the International Talent Search of Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth.
Bristol earned high scores on this above-grade-level testing taken by more than 400,000 students from across the country. According to a letter from Elizabeth Albert, senior director of academic programs and services for the program, Bristol achieved a test score in the top 25 percent of participants.
“Tom is an inspiring young man, and we trust that we will be impressed by his accomplishments for many years to come,” said Middle School Division Director Heather Coulter.
The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth identifies and develops the talents of the most advanced kindergarten through 12th grade learners worldwide. Through this program, students participate in a test designed for students several grades higher, have access to challenging and inspiring summer courses and an opportunity to be recognized in the organization’s magazine and online.
Bristol, whose mother is Chinese, has taken classes in Chinese. He said he looks forward to taking additional classes this summer to learn more about the language. “It’s fun to learn a different language,” he said. “Now I can listen and hear fluently about my culture in that language.”
Bristol also qualified this year for the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP). Bristol’s mother, Claire Bristol, said that she and her husband found the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth when looking for ways to provide their son with additional challenging educational opportunities.
Dr. David S. Wood, provost of Wofford College, has announced the dean’s list students for the fall 2013 semester, including: Cala Rae Cocca, Salisbury; Stacey Maguire Mangan, China Grove; Kane Carter Sherrill, Mooresville.
The following students from Salisbury have been named to UNC Asheville’s fall 2013 chancellor’s list or dean’s list: Anna Julee Maphis and Edward Wallace Pietryk III, dean’s list.
The dean’s list is made up of full-time students who have achieved between 3.5 and 3.99 grade point average.
The Salisbury Lions Club awarded a first-, second- and third-place winner for their Peace Poster contest recently at their annual Lion of the Year banquet at the Country Club of Salisbury. The awards were a $50, $30 and $15 gift cards.
Students of Sacred Heart Catholic School won all three places. Rachel Harrison won first place; Emilee Hibshman won second place; and Jimmy Sentilles won third place.
