Davie County’s Shrine Bowl offensive lineman Trip McNeill, 6-foot-5, 295 and a Duke commit, was honored for the second straight season as a member of the AP All-State team.
Voting results were announced on Monday. The AP will announce the state coach of the year today and the state player of the year on Wednesday.
Mallard Creek followed its run to the 4AA state championship with three All-State picks — tight end Jaylen Samuels, offensive lineman Omar Todman and defensive lineman Ikeem Allen.
Greensboro Dudley, which won the 4A title, also had multiple picks with linebacker Chris Register and athlete Emmanuel Moseley.
Lake Norman, Fayetteville Pine Forest and Belmont South Point also had two picks and were the other schools with multiple selections to the 32-player squad.
Samuels, McNeill, Davidson Day quarterback Will Grier, Charlotte Catholic running back Elijah Hood and Belmont South Point linebacker Daishon Davis were repeaters.
Hood, who changed his commitment from Notre Dame to North Carolina, was the leading vote-getter by being named on 12 of 13 ballots cast by sports writers from across the state.
Grier — a Florida recruit — and Charlotte Providence offensive lineman Bentley Spain were second with 11 votes each, while Samuels earned 10.
Three players tied for the second running back position: Garner’s Nyheim Hines, Concord’s Rocky Reid and Havelock’s Derrell Scott.
Lake Norman’s Corey Joyner, Southern Durham’s Maurice Trowell and Gastonia Forestview’s Mykelti Armstrong made the team at receiver.
On the offensive line, East Henderson’s Nathan Dalton and Fayetteville Britt’s Kyle Erickson joined Spain, McNeill and Todman.
Lake Norman quarterback Josh Ladowski tied for a spot at athlete with Moseley after throwing for more than 3,000 yards and running for more than 2,000.
On defense, Pine Forest had the top two vote-getters on the line with Georgia recruit Lamont Gaillard and Boston College recruit Harold Landry to play alongside Mallard Creek’s Allen and West Forsyth’s Quintin Brinkley, the CPC Defensive Player of the Year. Wilmington Laney’s Coult Culler joined Dudley’s Register and South Point’s Davis at linebacker.
Rocky River’s Jaire Alexander, High Point Central’s Germaine Pratt, South Point’s Tanner Muse, Lincolnton’s Quinlyn Harris and Monroe’s Tre’Shun Wynn made up the defensive secondary.
Thomas Blakey of Asheville Reynolds and Bunn’s Freeman Jones tied for the kicker position, while Charlotte Ardrey Kell’s Corbin Daly was voted in at punter and Indian Trail Porter Ridge’s Jerrick Robbins was named at kick returner.
A.L. Brown’s boys won 71-62 against Robinson on Monday to take fifth place in the Holiday Classic at Cox Mill.
David Tripp led the Wonders with 20 points, and Greg Joyner had a career-best 15.
Freshman guard Lavar Batts scored 29 for Robinson. Jordan McKenzie scored 14, and Connor Boothe had 10.
Joekeem Neal scored 20 points to lead a 60-23 romp against Union Academy on Saturday. The Wonders (5-5) went 2-1 in the tournament and host East Rowan Friday.
• A.L. Brown’s girls are 4-6 after losing a fifth-place game 44-31 to Rocky River. Kyla Downs scored eight, and Aitana Grant had six.
• West Davidson’s boys lost to Ledford 48-36 in the NewBridge Bank Classic final. Tyler Grooms scored 15 to lead the Green Dragons.
