Members of Eclectic Readers donate to Christmas Happiness

Back in the day, a group of young mothers began meeting over a brown bag lunch to chit chat about the latest books they’d read. Now many of the women, who total 12, are grandmothers and mothers who meet for lunch dates.
The women, who once were the Brown Bag Readers, are now the Eclectic Readers. The group collected money to donate to this year’s Christmas Happiness Fund. President Julie Pinkston said the women have donated money for years and this time each gave $10 to the fund, which benefits children at Christmas.
Christmas Happiness contributions are collected at the Salisbury Post and listed in the paper each day. The Salvation Army of Rowan County distributes those funds. Families receive a voucher to buy Christmas presents for each child who qualifies.
“We just want to help children have a happy Christmas,” Pinkston said.
The women meet once a month to discuss the latest book they are all reading together over a lunch meal.
Pinkston taught for 31 years in the Rowan-Salisbury School System and two years prior to that in Florida. Pinkston taught multimedia programs, English, journalism and accounting.
“I have a real soft spot in my heart for children,” Pinkston said.
Bring contributions to the Salisbury Post, 131 W. Innes St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or mail them to The Salisbury Post Christmas Happiness Fund, P.O. Box 4639, Salisbury, NC 28145-4639.
