SALISBURY — Rowan County’s 19-C Judicial District Bar held its annual meeting at the Salisbury Country Club Nov. 20 and elected new officers.
Elected for one-year terms are President Carole C. Brooke of Brooke & Brooke Attorneys in China Grove, Vice President Kathryn C. Setzer of Doran Shelby Pethel & Hudson and secretary/treasurer Richard R. Reamer of Kluttz Reamer Hayes Randolph Adkins & Carter.
Darin Jordan of Whitley & Jordan in Salisbury continues to serve as bar councilor for the 19-C Judicial District, which is Rowan County.
Outgoing President Pete Smith presided during the meeting, which included Ron Baker, president of the North Carolina State Bar, making a special presentation honoring John J. Holshouser Jr. and Glenn E. Ketner Jr. for completing 50 years of service to the bar and the community as practicing lawyers.
The 19-C Judicial District Bar serves lawyers who live and practice in Rowan County.
Membership in the district bar is required by state law in conjunction with attorney’s memberships in the State Bar Association. Among other things, the State Bar Association regulates the admission and practice of all licensed attorneys in this state.
The 19-C District Bar Association has about 150 members.

SALISBURY — Novant Health Rowan Medical Center was recognized with another “A” Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.
The A score was awarded in the latest update to the Hospital Safety Score based on preventable medical errors, injuries accidents and infections. The Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety.

CONCORD — Carolinas HealthCare System’s Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast has been named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission in recognition of its clinical performance in multiple specialties.
The designation recognizes hospitals for attaining excellence in using evidence-based processes that are shown to improve care. This distinction places CMC-NorthEast among the top 33 percent of all Joint Commission-accredited hospitals that reported accountability measure performance data for 2012.
 “We’re committed to providing exceptional care based on the highest clinical standards,” said Phyllis Wingate, president of CMC-NorthEast. “We’re very proud to receive this national distinction, which recognizes our excellence in providing safe, effective, high-quality care to our community.”
 CMC-NorthEast was recognized for achievement in several measure sets: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care and children’s asthma. To be named as a Top Performer, the hospital achieved the highest levels of performance in providing evidence-based care for the named measure sets. Evidence-based practices include giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients, giving antibiotics one hour before surgery, and providing a home management plan of care for children with asthma.

KANNAPOLIS — The Kannapolis Intimidators have hired Scott Brumfiel as director of sales. With 19 years experience in professional sports, Brumfiel brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in ticket and sponsorship sales to the organization.
“We are excited to have someone of Scott’s caliber join our front office staff,” said Intimidators GM Randy Long.
Brumfiel most recently worked in hockey with the Odessa Jackalopes in Texas.
He has worked at every level of baseball — from Independent ball with the Richmond Roosters of the Frontier League, to the affiliated Ft. Wayne Wizards of the Midwest League, to Major League Baseball’s Cincinnati Reds. He also spent three years in racing in the ARCA Series, two years in CBA basketball and two years running MVP Sports Marketing, working with numerous racing teams and several professional anglers in the BASS and FLW Series.
Brumfiel has been married to his wife Shelly for 21 years and has two daughters, Keirstan and Bailey, and a son, Jackson.
The Kannapolis Intimidators are preparing for the team’s 20th season of professional baseball and 14th as the Class A Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.

SALISBURY — The Elks of North Carolina has donated a new mini bus to the N.C. State Veterans Home in Salisbury.  
Lee Littiken presented the keys to administrator Sally Davis.
This is the third vehicle the Elks have provided for veteran residents. The Elks have long played a vital role in supplying gifts that help improve the quality of life for residents at the home.
SALISBURY — The Salisbury Farmers Market will remain open on Saturdays through Dec. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon, but the market will be closed Nov. 30. 
Merchants are now taking orders for Thanksgiving pies and holiday treats, and both senior and WIC vouchers are now accepted at the market. The Salisbury Farmers Market is located at the former Wrenn House Restaurant parking lot, across the street from Rowan Public Library, at the corner of West Fisher and South Jackson streets.
The Salvation Army “Angel Tree” Campaign is underway, and gift tags with wishes for children in need can be picked up at local Subway restaurants.
The Angel Tree program gives donors an easy way to provide new, unopened toys and clothing to children who otherwise would receive few or no gifts at Christmas.
“Each Angel Tree tag represents a precious boy or girl in our community,” said Major Bobby Lancaster, commanding officer for the Charlotte Area Command of The Salvation Army. “Having the tags in Subway restaurants provides higher visibility and will greatly increase our ability to make Christmas brighter for each and every child.”
Contributors can take one or more of the tags from the display, purchase appropriate gifts for the child or children described on the tags, and return the gifts unwrapped to their local Salvation Army by Dec. 13. All gifts received will be distributed to the families by The Salvation Army in time for Christmas.

KANNAPOLIS — Charlotte-area students from 17 local high schools set a new record by raising more than 142,342 pounds of food in the Fourth Annual Carolinas Student Hunger Drive, which was sponsored by Food Lion.
The students collected non-perishable food for six weeks through local Food Lion stores and on their school campuses.
Winners included Cabarrus-Kannapolis Early College, and student Cody Braden of the early college won a scholarship.

Southern States Cooperative will review its operations at a series of local annual meetings, including the upcoming meeting Dec. 3 for members of Southern States Cooperative, Inc. – Salisbury Service.
“Fiscal 2013 was a solid year for Southern States Cooperative,” President and CEO Thomas R. Scribner said. “The winter was much more ‘normal’ than last year, which allowed us to grow our propane sales by 5 million gallons. Spring was not quite as ideal as wet weather hindered planting but Southern States more than doubled cash earnings from last year.”
The meeting Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 1710 Jake Alexander Blvd., begins at 7 p.m.
The meeting will include reports on both local and company-wide operations, as well as projected budget results for next year. Local board members will be elected and retiring board members will be recognized.
