This photograph comes to the Post through Mike Cline, onetime manager of the Capitol Theatre on West Innes Street from 1971-76, and Donna Peeler Poteat, who sent the image to him from the Rowan Public Library’s website. Cline says this photo in the 100 block of West Innes Street was taken in the period of May 17-19, 1937, because those were the dates ‘Cafe Metropole’ showed at the Capitol. The movie starred Tyrone Power and Loretta Young. Also prominent in the photograph are the delivery trucks of Rustin Furniture. The Capitol Theatre was the first movie house in Salisbury to show talking pictures in 1928 and the fourth in the state. It closed for good in 1977 and was torn down in 1979. The Capitol had a 50-plus-year run in Salisbury.
