Catawba’s women’s basketball team lost 65-60 to Fayetteville State on Sunday at Capel Arena.
The Indians missed their first 14 shots before Mallary Clay made a shot to make it 16-5 with 6:42 left in the half.
Catawba trailed 32-24 at halftime.
The Indians (1-1) actually went ahead 50-49 with 5:57 left, but the Broncos (2-0) scored the next four points and led the rest of the way.
Antionette McPhail had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Indians. Chloe Bully had 13 points, and Clay finished with nine.
Catawba had a big advantage on the boards but shot only 31 percent.
Amber Calvin scored 22 for the Broncos.
Catawba is at Wingate on Wednesday to start SAC play.

Salisbury’s Christopher Queen tied for eighth in the Freshman/Sophomore Division at the Winternational junior event played at Pinehurst No. 6. Queen shot a two day total of 83-78-161.
The CIAA announced Sunday that it will hold its volleyball championship after all. The matches will be played at Fayetteville State on Saturday.

DENVER — Peyton Manning went virtually untouched by Kansas City’s sack-happy defense late Sunday night, throwing for 323 yards and a touchdown to lead the Denver Broncos to a 27-17 victory over the NFL’s last undefeated team.

The Chiefs, who came into the game with a league-leading 36 sacks, barely breathed on Manning, who finished 24 for 40.
The Broncos tied Kansas City at 9-1 atop the AFC West with a rematch set in two weeks.
Denver fell short of its league-leading average of 41.2 points but the Chiefs, who came in allowing a NFL-low 12.8 per game, couldn’t keep up.
Alex Smith threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns for Kansas City, which hadn’t lost since a 38-3 setback in Denver last December to close out a 2-14 season.
