SHS soccer rolls 8-1

Salisbury’s soccer team didn’t play at its peak but rolled 8-1 against East Burke in the first round of the 2A soccer playoffs on Tuesday at Ludwig Stadium.
Salisbury (22-1) got four goals from striker Bobby Cardelle and three assists from Lucas Capito.
Also scoring for the Hornets were Michael Brown, Luis Diaz, Capito and Joshua Lynch.
Philip Simons, Andrew Kalogeromitros, Clint Comadoll and Zack Sukkasem had assists.
“Our effort left a lot to be desired,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said. “We came in overconfident and lacking cohesion and precision. To put it mildly, we were lethargic. That will not be an option the rest of the playoffs.
Salisbury will play the Lexington-Hendersonville winner on Saturday.
Hendersonville made the Final Four in 1A a year ago.
• No. 5 seed Carson is at home tonight against Hickory in a 3A first-round contest.
South Rowan’s Alexandria Bare shot 95-95 — 190 in the 3A state championships at Foxfire.
Bare had a solid outing and finished in the middle of the pack.
Ledford rolled to the team championship by shooting 498.
Lee County’s Siranon Shoomee was individual champion at 76-73 — 149.
The state cross county championships are set for Saturday at Kernersville’s Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex, formerly known as Beeson Park.
The first race of the day is the 3A boys championship at 10 a.m. East Rowan’s team and Carson’s Zachary Marchinko will compete in that race.
The 3A girls race is set for 11 a.m. West Rowan’s Rebecca Parker will compete.
The last race of the day is the 2A girls race at 4:30 p.m. Salisbury’s Susannah Dixon qualified for that race.
In 4A, the Broughton boys and Green Hope girls will look to defend state titles.
In 3A, Cardinal Gibbons has won the last two boys titles and the last three girls championships.
Carrboro has won four straight 2A girls championships. North Lincoln has won the last two 2A boys titles.
In 1A, Bishop McGuinness is the defending champion in boys and girls.
Twins Emily and Katherine Shields (Salisbury) helped Lees-McRae finish third at the Mountain Bike Nationals held at Beech Mountain.
In the cross country race, Emily finished sixth, while Katherine finished 11th.
On the short track, Emily placed fifth to earn a spot on the podium. Katherine was seventh.
Tusculum’s Bo Cordell broke the D-II record for career passing yards on Saturday.
Cordell threw for 349 yards in a loss to Wingate and raised his career total to 15,049 passing yards.
Hurley YMCA Warriors competed in the second annual Halloween Dash on a cold day.
