The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education could take action Monday on the county’s offer of a new site for a proposed school system central office.
That’s the first item on the discussion and action portion of the school board’s agenda. The meeting starts at 5 p.m. at 110 N. Long St. in East Spencer.
Last week, county commissioners voted to offer a slate of five possible sites for a new central office and said they’d consider two alternate sites that weren’t named.
The five sites listed are beside Isenberg Elementary School on Jake Alexander Boulevard; on North Long Street in East Spencer, the site of one of the system’s existing administrative offices; on Old Concord Road, beside the bus garage; in Summit Corporate Center, the county’s industrial park; and in China Grove, off U.S. 29.
There are two more sites — at least one in the downtown Salisbury area — that commissioners said they would consider but which haven’t been identified.
Commissioners Chairman Jim Sides said the only site he won’t consider is at 329 S. Main St. in Salisbury. The city offered that land for the central office and worked with the state to clean up the former gas station site, but commissioners contend there’s no proof it doesn’t still contain contamination.
Sides said he wants a resolution of the long-running central office debate linked to the ending of a budget dispute that currently has the county and school board in mediation.
Other items on Monday’s agenda include consideration of the 2014-15 school calendar, local options for Henderson Independent High School under the state’s new accountability model and a presentation on the board attorney’s suggestion for selecting 25 percent of teachers to four-year contracts, a system the General Assembly approved to replace tenure.
