SALISBURY — The statewide Moral Monday protest will come to Salisbury in mid-November, local NAACP President Scott Teamer said Wednesday.
Teamer said the Rev. William Barber, who has led the rallies and is president of the N.C. NAACP, will be in attendance. Neither a date nor venue has been selected, he said.
“It’s quite an honor. A lot of Mondays (Barber) hasn’t been able to attend,” Teamer said. “He told Rowan he chose this chapter specifically because he’s proud of this chapter and its direction.”
Teamer said the rally is special for Rowan County because some of the state’s controversial legislation came from area delegates.
“We know that some of the sponsors of these controversial bills are right here in our county,” Teamer said, “so it’s good that we’re having Moral Monday right here in our county.”
Since the legislative session ended in July, weekly protests have sprung up in towns across the state. In August, roughly 2,000 people filled a downtown Charlotte park.
Teamer urged local clergy and other interested parties to contact the local NAACP chapter prior to the rally.
Teamer said he hopes Barber will be able to stimulate political interest within the community.
“In this area, people have become a little bit complacent,” Teamer said. “Reverend Barber is a strategizer, a motivator, and he has the ability to shed light here in this area.”
Teamer said local and state committees are working together to plan the specifics for the event. Those details are expected to be released in coming weeks.
Those interested in the rally are asked to contact Teamer at scottteamer@att.net.
