Shining a spotlight on city

Did you feel the buzz in the air last weekend? It came not only from the fall weather but also the celebration of the 38th annual OctoberTour.
This year featured another wonderful selection of homes highlighting Salisbury’s commitment to historic preservation. In addition to the home tour, the event included two kickoff events, the Harvest Moon Sponsor Patrons’ Party and OctoberTour Luncheon, both of which sold out. Hosted by Historic Salisbury Foundation (HSF), the event has become a tradition for many, both local residents and visitors. All proceeds go to HSF for future preservation initiatives in this community.
The wonderful time had by all would not be possible without the devoted friends of HSF who gave so graciously of their time and creative ideas. We are very fortunate to have such a wide variety of talents involved with OctoberTour each and every year.
I would like to take a few moments to reflect, as the chair of the 38th OctoberTour, on exactly what it takes to coordinate this event. Planning begins in January, when the homes on tour are selected. The gracious homeowners worked diligently for nine months to prepare their homes for display. From that point, there have been hundreds of other volunteers who have contributed to the success, with approximately 1,100 visitors in the West Square District and 900 in the Brooklyn South Square District homes.
In addition to those that have given so passionately of their time, I want to thank the sponsors for their generous financial commitment. We had over 50 sponsors contributing in 2013, including local companies, friends of HSF and trade partners.
Finally, our thanks go out to the city of Salisbury for allowing us to put the city in the spotlight and manage pedestrian traffic flow. In addition to the many out-of-town visitors attending the tour, 21 Oil Painters of America artists captured the beauty of our town on canvas during the weekend. One painter shared how thankful he was for the opportunity to participate, as he had only driven through Salisbury on the interstate and had no idea what lay beyond.
On a personal note, I along with Fran Misner want to thank HSF for allowing us the opportunity to serve as chair and co-chair. It has been a satisfying and humbling experience and has further renewed our belief that the great citizens of Salisbury are committed to community service and preserving our distinctive charm for future generations.
