I would like to thank members of the Livingstone College cross-country team, men and women, for spending the day with the student body of Overton Elementary School at their Fun Run PTA fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 18.
It meant so much to the students, staff and volunteers that the team members took their time to come and run, walk and cheer on the students as they ran laps around the Knox Middle School track. These young men and women were encouraging, friendly and so kind to our students.
These are the wonderful role models that we have available to our schools and our community and I hope they will continue to participate in many volunteer activities.

In response to Elizabeth Dugger’s letter “Bus Tragedy’s Devastation,” I’m sure that Barbara Smith did not do this intentionally. But the fact remains that she was obviously not paying attention to what was happening on the road.
I don’t know if she might have been using a cell phone, changing a radio station or simply lost in thought; whatever she was doing, she was not paying attention. And the result of that lapse in judgment is a dead child who had his whole life in front of him.
I find it hard to believe she just “didn’t see” the school bus … it is big, bright and yellow with red flashing lights and a stop sign that extends from the side that also has flashing lights. It’s hard to “not see” that!
That fact alone shows she was doing her job as a licensed driver. I understand that she is a friend, and people should stick by their friends, but to say this was a tragic accident is ridiculous. This was tragic, yes, but it wasn’t an accident; it was an avoidable mistake that resulted in a high school student being killed.
I’m not going to speculate on what her punishment should be, but it certainly needs to be more than just living with it, because that is what the parents and family members of the deceased have to do, and they weren’t driving the car.
