Jimmie Meese Moomaw will speak at Trinity Oaks Retirement Community about her book, “Southern Fried Child,” on Friday, Oct. 4.
Moomaw will read from her book at 2 p.m. She writes as the only child of dysfunctional parents and assorted other relatives growing up in the segregated South during the 1940s and 1950s.
She says her alcoholic father named her 18 years before she was born. She spent her life teaching communications on the college level for 40 years. In her press material, she writes she “lived a Southern fried childhood, complete with horses and healers and heathens and whores and flawed parents who loved me both too much and not enough.” The story is written in the first person and recounts her unusual experiences.
The reading is free and will take place in the special events room.
Elkin author Sarah Martin Byrd will be at Autumn Jubilee with her third book, a children’s picture book, “The Manger Mouse.” She will also have her two books, “Guardian Spirit” and “The Color of My Heart,” which are novels.
She has written newspaper columns and been an advertising manager for a newspaper. She is a blogger who speaks at schools, book clubs, libraries and festivals.
The children’s book has a holiday theme with mouse Matty in the manger as the Christmas story unfolds.
Author Eddie Ray, from Franklin, will be at Kannapolis Branch Library, 850 Mountain St., on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m., with his book “Against All Odds: The Incredible Life Story of Eddie Ray.”
Ray is the director of the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in downtown Kannapolis.
He will be speaking about his journey from stock boy to becoming vice president of Capitol/Tower Records in Hollywood.
During his career, Ray has been directly involved in the successful careers of recording artists, songwriters and producers such as Fats Domino, Rick Nelson, Dave Bartholomew, Slim Whitman, The Osmonds, Allen Toussaint, Lou Rawls, Hank Williams Jr., Ernie Freeman, Mike Curb, Irma Thomas, Sammy Davis Jr., Ian Whitcomb, Al Green, Pink Floyd, Mae West and many others.
After the program, Ray will sell and sign his autobiography.
