Childress is state champion

Salisbury’s Michael Childress won the NC State Tar Heel Youth Gollf Association Middle School Tournament on Saturday at Badin Inn and Resort.
Childress, an eighth-grader, shot 69-74 — 143.
The tournament came down to the last hole. Childress got out of a sand trap on No. 18, and then made a 20-foot par putt to win by a stroke over Charlotte’s Grant Smith. Childress was named first team All-State.
Bryson Sprinkle of Salisbury shot 82-77 — 159 and finished 15th.
Raleigh Ravenscroft won the team middle school championship.
Wake Forest’s Haeley Wotnosky shot 72-78 — 150 and won the middle school girls championship.
East Rowan’s teams competed in the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.
East’s boys finished second behind Northern Guilford.
Cal Meyers ran 17:25 to lead East’s boys and placed 12th out of 159 runners. Chance Brown (14th, 17:28), Justin Allen (19th, 17:41), Jason Basso (18:20), Nikolas Pillsbury (18:41), Daniel Troutman (19:02) and Caleb Payton (19:07) competed for East.
•East’s girls finished 14th, Raleigh Ravenscroft won the girls competition.
Faith Blume (18th, 21:27) led the Mustangs in a field of 113. Also competing were Haley Lyerly (24:31), Anna Louis Alexander (24:34), Karlie Neigel (24:44), Sydney Feriante (24:46), Allison Smith (25:42) and Brooke Waller (26:59).
•West Rowan’s boys competed in the High Country Meet in Boone and finished ninth out of 19 teams. Spring Valley (S.C.) won.
Jordan Bostian (48th, 18:36) led the Falcons. Also competing in the varsity race were Jacob Fleming (18:52), Cameron Butler (19:01), Dagan Williams (19:04), Wade Laing (19:06), Joseph Ward (19:33) and Cade Harrill (19:40).
West also competed in the jayvee race and finished ninth out of 12 teams. Miller Graham (22nd, 19:21) led the Falcons. Competing were Noah Teeter (20:25), Jesse Regrut (20:40), Clay Cranford (21:21), Dakota Goodson (22:04) and Patrick Waldo (22:29).
Catawba’s women’s soccer team scored twice in the first half and won 2-1 at Newberry on Saturday in a SAC match.
Catawba (3-4-1, 1-2-1) got a goal from Amy Iwanicki and also scored an own goal.
Catawba goes to Chowan on Wednesday.
• Catawba’s men battled to a scoreless tie at Newberry.
The Indians (3-2-1, 1-2-1) got shutout goalkeeping from Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury). He made three saves.
Catawba is at Chowan on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Catawba lost 23-25, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-13 at Mars Hill on Saturday in a SAC match.
Erin Morant led the Indians (2-6, 2-4) with 10 kills and five blocks.
Catawba is at Carson-Newman on Friday.
• Catawba Valley Community College is 23-0 after winning three matches on Saturday. CVCC swept Surry, Hagerstown and Louisburg.
Tiffany Brooks (South Rowan) had 12 kills against Surry. Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had four kills and two aces.
Cloninger had 15 kills against Hagerstown, while Brooks had six.
Brooks and Cloninger teamed for 15 kills against Louisburg.
