September is National Preparedness Month. Roy Beam, a retired sergeant with the N.C. State Highway Patrol and member of the Community Emergency Response Team explained how to be prepared when disaster strikes with your own emergency response kit.

Mall moves

Rowan County dropped of an auction for the Salisbury Mall on Wednesday as bidding climbed to $4.33 million, past county commissioners’ self-imposed bid ceiling. But on Friday, county officials learned the winning bidder hadn’t finalized the deal and the mall owner may be willing to negotiate directly with the county, which might use the mall for some departments.

Highway to Heaven

Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, Chaplain Patrick Powell parks his Dodge Stratus alongside Interstate 85 and preaches a sermon to truckers barrelling down the highway and taking a break at a nearby truck stop. Some receive his message well, and some don’t. But either way, he keeps preaching because, as he says, “I’m heaven bound with the hammer down.”

Spinning success

Gildan Activewear, which is already doing a $43 million renovation on a yarn-spinning plant that will employe 200 people, is considering the county for a second plant that would bring 184 more jobs to Rowan and mean $127 million more in capital investment. The company is asking the county for incentives, including free land.
