SALISBURY — Police say a man who stole $14,000 worth of jewelry from Kmart in August has been trying to sell it at pawn shops from Spencer to Kannapolis.
Richard Vontorios Miller, 42, of 233 Claymont Drive in Salisbury, was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony breaking and entering a building, felony larceny and obtaining property by false pretenses.
He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center, where he remains as of noon Thursday under a $100,000 secured bond.
Early on the morning of Aug. 10, the Salisbury Police Department responded to an alarm at the Kmart store on East Innes Street. Security footage showed a person with a hood over his head and his face covered breaking in through the garden center.
The thief smashed the glass door with a rock, placed jewelry inside bags and took a spinning display case. Officers found the empty display case in a nearby wooded area.
Police said Thursday that Miller raised the suspicions of at least one pawn shop owner after he came in to sell the stolen goods.
