Davidson County Community College will soon be featured in an upcoming broadcast of “Breakthroughs with Martin Sheen,” an award-winning series that benefits from strategic partnerships with public television. Filming took place on campus recently; the broadcast will air later this fall.
The film is a 7-minute segment that will focus on the benefits of community college, using DCCC as an example. It includes interviews with Dr. Mary E. Rittling, president of DCCC, Dana Jafroodi, biology instructor and Jason Spinelli, DCCC student.
“Filming this piece was an outstanding opportunity to share our own story of how we are helping a growing number of students succeed in a rapidly changing global economy,” explains Rittling.
Rittling notes in the segment that many students believe they have to go to a four-year institution to be successful in today’s world, but community colleges play an important role in the country’s education system.
“Community colleges are the most flexible, accessible and affordable option in higher education,” Rittling adds. “DCCC is a great example of how effective community colleges can be; our students are highly motivated and have a passion for learning and our faculty understand that to be successful teachers, they must also be mentors, innovators and collaborators. That all-important partnership results in students who are self-confident and successful.”
“Breakthroughs with Martin Sheen,” which airs on some PBS member stations and other public TV outlets across the United States, covers a broad range of topics across American life, including innovations, advances, technology, education and more.
