The football season for Catawba and Livigstone begins today.
Curtis Walker makes his debut as Catawba’s head coach when the Indians host West Liberty (W. Va.) at 1:30 p.m.
Mark McDaniel (South Rowan) is expected to start at safety for the Indians, with Timmy Pangburn (West Rowan) starting at guard.
Danny O’Brien, a transfer from Wisconsin, is Catawba’s new quarterback.
Catawba opened the 2012 season with a 24-3 win at West Liberty.
Former West Rowan standout Quentin Sifford (No. 40) is a West Liberty defensive end.
• Livingstone opens the season with a bang with a 4 p.m. Commemorative Classic contest at Charlotte’s Memorial Stadium against rival Johnson C. Smith.
The Commemorative Classic references the Livingstone-Biddle contest that got black college football started in 1892. Biddle is now J.C. Smith.
Livingstone interim head coach Daryl Williams has high hopes that the Blue Bears will make the sort of defensive strides this season that they made on offense in 2012, but it will be a tough test. J.C. Smith routed Livingstone last season, and the Blue Bears last won this rivalry game in 2008.
True freshman T.J. Jefferson (East Rowan) is expected to start on the offensive line for the Blue Bears.

Sara Lentz, Addie Gantt, Erika Meadows and Kate Cole won singles matches as Carson’s girls tennis team beat West Davidson 5-4.
Laura Isenhour-Lentz won a decisive doubles match on a 10-8 tiebreaker.
Karl Ahrens of Gold Hill made a hole-in-one on the No. 12 hole at McCanless.
Ahrens aced the 125-yard hole with a pitching wedge and a Srixon ball.
He was playing with the “Morton Group.” His partners were Ed Caudle and Joe Parker.
It was Ahrens’ second hole-in-one.
• After three rounds of the eGolf Tour’s River Landing Open, former Salisbury High star Will Collins and Salisbury resident Frank Adams III are in contention.
At 15-under, Collins is in second place, two shots off the pace, after shooting 68-66-67 — 201.
Adams has shot 69-64-70 — 203 and is alone in fourth.
The North Rowan High School Booster Club will meet on Monday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. in the school auditorium.
New members are encouraged to attend.
The NCHSAA lists A.L. Brown, Carson, Salisbury, West Rowan and Davie County among its 128 members schools that were “ejection-free” in the 2012-13 school year.
Registration is under way for fall soccer (ages 3-14) and modified T-Ball (ages 4-6) at the Hurley YMCA.

Catawba opened the volleyball season with a 3-0 loss to Shippensburg on Friday.
Bri Howard had eight kills and five blocks for the Indians.
Sacred Heart’s soccer team got goals from Will Taylor, William Austin, Melvin Bonilla and Michael Childress and beat Concordia 4-3.
• Sacred Heart’s varsity and jayvee volleyball teams won close matches with Concordia.
