Carson takes step in right direction

Carson coach Joe Pinyan checked in with the Post well past midnight after a grueling Saturday.
Pinyan began Saturday with his new team scrimmaging against Monroe and Monroe Central Academy at Wingate. He finished his draining day in Charlottesville’s Va., helping his son move.
As far as Carson’s first scrimmage, Pinyan was in a pretty good mood about what he witnessed.
“We did some things good and some things not so good,” Pinyan said. “You gotta remember our kids are making the county’s biggest changes. Everyone else in the county (including Salisbury, where Pinyan coached the last 10 years) is basically going to be doing the same thing they’ve been doing. But our kids are learning a different offense and a different defense. They’re making some mistakes, but they’ve been very accepting of all the changes they’ve had to make.”
Pinyan has brought not only his wishbone offense from Salisbury, but also the defensive scheme that Salisbry employed.
“I’m a pretty simple guy,” Pinyan quipped. “I only know one offense and I only know one defense — just like I’ve only been married to one woman.”
Pinyan was very impressed by Monroe.
“Monroe is very talented, and I won’t be surprised if they make a deep playoff run,” Pinyan said. “I was in school at Appalachian with Monroe’s coach (Johnny Sowell), and there’s no doubt his bunch is really gonna be good. Still, I thought our kids hung in there and mixed it up with Monroe pretty good, and they had fun hitting someone besides each other.”
All in all, Pinyan said the Cougars took a big step forward.
“Our mistakes that we made are fixable,” he said. “It was a positive day.
