Nianouris to play for title
Alex Nianouris (Salisbury) won two more matches on Saturday in the North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship that is being held at Carolina Country Club in Raleigh.
The fifth-seeded Nianouris, a 19-year-old sophomore at Davidson, won 2 and 1 against Burlington’s Blair Bowland in a morning quarterfinal and won 7 and 5 against West End’s Josh Stockwell in a semifinal.
Nianouris advanced to today’s 8 a.m. championship match against 10th-seeded Carter Jenkins, an 18-year-old Raleigh native who will play at UNC Greensboro.
Jenkins is the reigning Carolinas Amateur champion.
Nianouris was down a hole against Bowland but tied the match with a birdie on No. 12, took a 1-up lead with a birdie on No. 14 and birdied No. 16 to go 2-up.
Both players parred No. 17 to end the match.
Nianouris had an easier time in his match against Stockwell. He was 4-up after six holes and 6-up after nine. Stockwell won only one hole, and Nianuoris ended the match with a birdie on No. 13.
• In the Adult/Child Tournament at McCanless, Steve McIntyre-Dwayne McIntyre shot 68 to win the 18-up division. In the 14-17 division, Alan Lambert-Brennan Lambert won with a 67. In the 10-13 division, Eric Mulkey-Chandler Mulkey won with a 73. Bo Hawkins-Tanner Hawkins and Pete Kuld-Gavin Kuld shot 76s, while Matt Miller-Alex Miller shot 77.
In the nine-hole 9-under division, Scott Perry-Brodie Perry shot 38 for first place, while Mark Hoeseman-Whitt Hoesman shot 39.
Brayden Mulkey won longest drive, while Jeff Warren won closest to the pin.
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 7-6 in 10 innings at Hagerstown on Saturday.
Kannapolis (42-68) led 6-3 early. Cleuluis Rondon homered for Kannapolis. Nick Basto had three of Kannapolis’ 11 hits.
