Young to coach East-West Game

West Rowan football coach Scott Young was named as head coach for the 2014 East-West All-Star Game.
Young is 158-43 in 15 seasons at West with three state titles.
Southern Nash’s Brian Foster heads the East staff.
• Davie’s Mike Absher was named as head coach for the North Carolina boys basketball team in the 2014 N.C.-S.C. All-Star Game.
• Aubrey Hollifield, who was an assistant coach in basketball and football at A.L. Brown, is now coaching at Shelby and was named as the West’s head boys basketball coach for the 2014 East-West All-Star Game.
West Rowan graduate Taylor Garczynski is one of six Francis Marion baseball signees.
An outfielder, Garczynski batted .355 as a senior, scored 17 runs and stole 12 bases.
Garczynski was honorable mention on the 2013 Perfect Game preseason All-America list.
Francis Marion coach Art Inabinet said, “Taylor is a good runner, throws well and swings a good bat from the left side. I expect him to challenge for an outfield starting spot as a freshman.”
State champions joining Randolph County and Wilmington in the Southeast Regional in Asheboro, so far, include Rockdale, Ga., Jacksonville, Fla., and Irmo-Chapin, S.C.
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 4-1 to Hagerstown on Thursday. Brent Tanner’s homer in the fourth provided the only run for Kannapolis.
West Rowan rising senior Nick Collins has been selected to play in the Blue-Grey Classic to be held in Greensboro on Aug. 3-4.
Collins is primarily an outfielder, but he played all over the diamond for the Falcons and also pitched.
Collins will be playing on Team Greensboro in the Blue-Grey event. North Rowan outfielder Chance Mazza will play for Team Charlotte.
South Rowan’s Davis Richards shot 73-72-71 — 216 to tie for sixth in the Carolinas Junior Championship held at Willow Creek in High Point.
• In second-round stroke play qualifying for the North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship in Raleigh, Roy Dixon III (Salisbury) shot 68 for a two-day score of 12-under 130 and placed second.
Alex Nianouris (Salisbury) shot 64 on Thursday for a two-day score of 9-under 133 and tied for fourth. Nianouris made an eagle and nine birdies on Thursday.
Alex Lee (Salisbury) shot 75-78 — 153 but didn’t make the cut. Thirty-two players advanced.
Match play starts today.

• Weather halted second-round play in the eGolf Tour’s River Run Classic on Thursday.
Three Dillingham Martial Arts students competed in the U.S. World Open in Orlando.
Hillman Tabi, a student at Livingstone, won first place in the men’s heavyweight sparring in the intermediate division. Bryce Mason won first place in point sparring, took second place in continuous sparring and was a finalist in weapons and traditional forms.
K.J. Ford, a returning champion, won first place in clash sparring, took second place in traditional form and was third in weapons and continuous sparring.
Ford received his first degree black belt in July.
