West wins opener

West Rowan’s Junior Legion baseball team won 4-0 against Area II champion Swansboro on Friday in the opening round of the double-elimination state tournament being held at East Forsyth High.
Bryan Ketchie pitched a two-hitter and struck out four.
Noah Teeter and Lee Poteat had two hits each. Hunter Shepherd and Lee Poteat had doubles. Lee Poteat drove in two runs.
Tyler Poteat, Margarito Romero and Kacey Otto had a hit apiece.
West (18-12) plays today at 3:30 against South Caldwell (19-0) from Lenoir.
• Carson defensive lineman Myquon Stout and West Rowan DB Najee Tucker were named to the preseason All-Midwest Region team by Football Friday Night Magazine.
• The NCPreps.com preseason 3A All-State team includes Stout and Concord linebacker Jerry Burk.
The 2A All-State team includes East Davidson linebacker Nathan Campbell and Thomasville DB Akeem Davis.
The 1A All-State team includes Albemarle defensive lineman Lee Autry, Albemarle DB Travis Bennett and Albemarle wide receiver Timmie White.
The 4A All-State team includes Davie offensive lineman Tripp McNeill and North Davidson defensive lineman Shyheim Tuttle.
• West Rowan linebacker Logan Stoodley, West offensive lineman Branden Hansen and East Rowan defensive lineman T.J. Jefferson will play in Wednesday’s East-West All-Star Game at High Point’s Simeon Stadium.
• UNC received a commitment from Providence’s Bentley Spain, one of the state’s top offensive linemen, on Friday.
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 4-3 at Delmarva on Friday when the Shorebirds rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Keon Barnum, Juan Ramirez and Nick Basto had two hits each for the Intimidators, who out-hit Delmarva 10-7.
• Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) drove in two runs on Friday. The 19-year-old has knocked in 45 in 62 games for the Great Lakes team in Midland, Mich.
Rowan County Little League’s 9-10 all-stars lost 14-13 in seven innings to East Surry in the state championship game played at Pilot Mountain on Friday.
In the eGolf Tour’s HGM Hotels Classic at Conover, Salisbury’s Frank Adams III has shot 71-70-70 — 211 and is 5-under after three rounds. Adams is tied for 21st, seven shots off the pace.
The Catawba College Athletics Department will hold its third annual silent auction on Aug. 8, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., in the Kirkland Lobby of Goodman Gym.
There is free admission to the auction and refreshments will be provided. Among the 140 items being auctioned are vacation homes (one-week stays), sports tickets, golf packages, VIP parking spots at Catawba football games, memberships to the YMCA and The Forum, Chiefs Club memberships and a fire pit.
Tickets will also be sold for a flat screen TV, and all proceeds from the evening will benefit Catawba College athletics.
