Filing heats up as deadline approaches Noon today is cutoff for municipal candidates

Nine candidates filed for election Thursday, crowding some races as the deadline for municipal filing nears.
Noon today is the cutoff for municipal office hopefuls.
Challengers for the Salisbury City Council race could see a difficult task after incumbent Brian Miller filed for re-election. Miller is the last of five incumbent members again filing for the council.
Tom Speaks and Dale Stephens, both challengers, also filed for election in the city race. Kenneth Blake Jarman and William Peoples Jr. are the other challengers so far.
In other municipal races:

Leonard M. West filed for the Cleveland commissioners race Thursday.
West will face challengers Gerald Osborne and Richard L. Taylor, along with incumbent Travis Summitt.
Titus H. King Sr. filed for an East Spencer alderman seat Thursday.
King, who has previously served on the board, faces only incumbent Tammy Corpening thus far.
Michael Hibler became the first challenger to file for the Faith aldermen race Thursday.
Only one other candidate, incumbent Keith Deal, has filed in the race. All five aldermen positions are up for grabs.
Wes Rhinier joined a trio of challengers vying for two Granite Quarry aldermen seats.
Michael Brinkley, Jake Fisher Jr. and Arin Wilhelm have also filed in the race.
Brad Kluttz’s and Eloise Peeler’s seats are up for election.
Nina E. Covington, a challenger, filed for election in the Kannapolis City Council race.
Covington, of Rowan County, will face a host of challengers, including fellow Rowan resident Thomas A. VanEtten, William Cranford, Darrell Jackson, Amos L. McClorey and Dianne Berry. Three Kannapolis city council seats are up for grabs.
Spencer Mayor Jody Everhart filed for re-election Thursday.
Incumbent Kevin Jones filed for re-election in the Spencer aldermen race.
Jones joins fellow incumbents Jeff Morris, Reid Walters, David H. Smith and Jim Gobbel, who are all running for re-election. Mike Boone is also running as a challenger in the race.
