Shields places third in national cycling event

Cyclist Katherine Shields (Salisbury) finished third in the U23 women’s division at the USA Cycling Amateur Road National Championships held in Madison, Wisc.
Shields is a rising junior at Lees-McRae.

Arkansas senior Chris Smith (West Rowan) is on the Athlon preseason All-SEC first team.
• Smith is on the second team All-SEC preseason team released by Phil Steele.
• Smith is ranked as the No. 2 defensive end in the SEC by Saturday Morning Tailgate.
• College Sports Madness has Smith on its second-team preseason All-SEC team.
Virginia junior Kevin Parks (West) is on Phil Steele’s preseason second-team All-ACC team.
Athlon also has Parks, who rushed for 734 yards as a sophomore, on its preseason second-team All-ACC squad.

Seventy-one GARS members played in foursomes at Crescent on Monday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Bobby Clark with a net of 64.09.
Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 71.64 was Clayton Steele.
Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 66.71 was Bobby Bryant.

• Nick Lyerly finished second in the 14-15 division in a Tarheel Youth Golf Association event held at Indian Valley Golf Course in Burlington. Lyerly shot 71.
• In the eGolf Tour’s Southern Open at The Club at Irish Creek, Brandon Cobb shot 64 in Wednesday’s first round.
Will Collins tied for 17th with a 69. Frank Adams III shot 70.

The Kannapolis Intimidators game was suspended in the fourth inning on Thursday with Virginia leading Kannapolis 3-0.
The game will resume as part of a doubleheader today at 5 p.m.
• Nick Lomascolo (Catawba) made his third appearance Monday. He pitched in relief and struck out three in 1 1/3 innings.
•Justin Seager (NW Cabarrus) is batting .319 with a homer and 10 RBIs after his first 18 games in rookie ball.
• Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) has a seven-game hitting streak in Class A ball. He’s batting .299 with eight homers and 41 RBIs.

Brett Huffman (West Rowan, UNCP) is batting .265 with two homers and six RBIs for the Lake Norman Copperheads of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League.
• Weston Smith (NW Cabarrus, Charlotte) is pitching for the Lake Norman team and has been sharp in five relief outings. He has a 1.42 ERA and seven strikeouts.
• Andy Austin (East Rowan) is batting .246 with two triples and two doubles for the Covington Lumberjacks of the Valley League.
• In the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game. John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown, Catawba) pitched two scoreless innings to start the game. He walked one and didn’t allow a hit. Zack Russell-Myers (Davie, Bluefield) pitched a scoreless third inning.
• Noah Holmes (East, Applachian) is batting .163 in the Alaska Baseball League with a homer and six RBIs.

The East Rowan 12s finished third in the Area 3 tournament and qualified for the state tournament.
• The East Rowan 10s were eliminated by Porter Ridge.

The South Rowan High football teams will conduct a fundraiser on Saturday, July 13, at the school from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Rowan County advances to play the winner of the High Point-Kernersville series that is tied 1-1.
Rowan’s third-round series is scheduled to start on Sunday.
High Point-Kernersville, Randolph-Davidson and Stanly-Mooresville Moors all were rained out on Wednesday.
