American Legion seeking new members

If you are currently on active duty, serving the United States honorably, anywhere in the world, or have served honorably during any of the eligible war eras, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post No. 342 is inviting you to become a member of the American Legion.
You can apply for membership at the post, located at 1024 Lincolnton Road, Salisbury. The phone number is 704-637-1722, and the office is open weekdays from 9 a.m.-noon for applications or information.
First Vice-Commander Milton L. Iossi said members have fun, fellowship and continuing service to the community and nation.
“American veterans have already proven their dedication to their country by their willingness to put themselves in harm’s way for their country,” Iossi said. “But they may not be aware of the opportunities for continuing service and fellowship through membership in the American Legion, our largest veteran service organization.”
Membership supports programs for youth such as Scouting, Boys State, Boys Nation, Girls State, American Legion Baseball and Oratorical Contest Scholarships; programs for veterans such as Family Assistance, Heroes to Hometown, VA support and Honor Guards for the fallen; education programs including ROTC, flag education and promotion of patriotic events; community support such as the Salvation Army and other charities; disaster relief and others.
Iossi listed other benefits of American Legion membership:
• Fellowship — Join your fellow veterans in our twice-monthly dinner meetings, service activities or just relaxed, informal conversation in the friendly atmosphere of the post’s canteen.
• Discounts — Your membership gives you and your family practical, money-saving discounts that can save you many times the cost of your annual membership dues. These include hotel chains, car rentals, travel services and more.
• Monthly magazine — The nation’s leaders speak directly to citizens on the pages of “The American Legion Magazine.” The Legion’s organizational goals are promoted using the words of talented writers, professional journalists and world leaders.
Iossi added the American Legion is the nation’s most influential, effective and dependable advocate of veterans affairs fighting for better active-duty pay, improved housing for active-duty families and helping to ensure that the VA’s medical system can properly care for veterans.
Legion membership helps support Department Service Officers nationwide who assist veterans in preparing claims and obtaining their full military health care benefits through the VA, Iossi said.
