Southern stars win

The Southern Division All-Stars beat the Northern Division 8-5 in the Area III All-Star Game played in Asheboro on Saturday.
The Southern stars used a six-run eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and held on to get their first win in the series. Eastern Randolph’s Casey Golden and Kernersville’s Evan Rogers hit homers for the Northern stars.
• Southern Rowan plays at Stanly today at 1 p.m.
With the Legion tiebreaking formula, Stanly could get the No. 2 seed for the upcoming playoffs if it wins the game by nine or more runs.
If Stanly wins by eight runs, there will be a coin flip to determine the No. 2 seed.
If Southern wins or loses by seven or fewer runs, Southern will be the No. 2 seed. The No. 2 seed gets home-field advantage for the Southern-Stanly playoff series that opens Tuesday.
Rowan has clinched the No. 1 seed and will host No. 4 Concord on Tuesday to start a best-of-five series.

The Rowan County Junior Legion team defeated Carson 2-0 on Saturday.
Joseph Peeler pitched the shutout. Rowan is home against Kannapolis tonight.

After helping the Region 6 team win the gold medal at the State Games, Carson rising senior Colton Laws will head to Georgia on July 1-12 for the Wood Bat World Series. Laws will be playing for the South Charlotte Panthers.
• East Rowan rising sophomore Ike Freeman is starring for the South Charlotte Panthers Class of 2016 team. Freeman went 3-for-3 in a romp over the East Cobb (Ga.) Expos and went 3-for-4 in a win against Action Texas.

Nick Lyerly placed second in the 14-15 age division in the Tarheel Youth Golf Association event held at the Country Club of Whispering Pines. Lyerly shot 74.
• Lyerly won his age group with a 74 in a National Junior Golf Tour event held at Statesville Country Club.
•In sectional qualifying for the Carolinas Amateur tournament held in Morganton, 12 players shot 70 or better to advance. Alex Lee (Salisbury) shot 81.

The Kannapolis Intimidators got two homers from Jason Coats and beat the Greenville Drive 9-3 on Saturday in the completion of the game that was suspended by weather on Friday night.
Kannapolis (32-46) dropped the nightcap 5-3.

The Rowan Patriots split a doubleheader with the Davie Pioneers on Saturday at Staton Field.
The Patriots won 2-1 in the opener but lost the nightcap 8-2. Roby Holmes (East Rowan) had two hits for the Patriots in the second game.
The Patriots have a doubleheader today against the Mooresville All-Americans with two seven-inning games. The first game is at 5 p.m.
Davie plays two today against the Carolina Freedom at North Rowan.

Due to the holidays, the West Rowan High School Athletic Boosters will not meet on July 1 and will meet instead on Monday, July 8, at 6:30 in the media center.
