John Bruce brought this photograph to the Post last week after former Gov. Jim Holshouser died at age 78. That’s Holshouser on the right, waving to the crowd at the 1972 Faith Fourth of July parade. At the time, Holshouser was a candidate for governor, an office he would win that November, becoming North Carolina’s first Republican governor of the 20th century. At left, riding with Holshouser, is then State Sen. Phil Kirk, who was seeking re-election to his seat. Kirk also would win in November, but a month later he announced he would vacate the Senate seat and become Holshouser’s administrative assistant. At the Faith Fourth festivities, Holshouser was introduced to the crowd by Mayor James Lingle, and Holshouser promised, “I’ll return to Faith on the Fourth as your governor.” He kept his promise the next year and the year after that. Bruce, by the way, was driving Holshouser’s parade car that day in 1972.
