Reports from the ballpark on Saturday were that Jim DeHart, one of the legends of Rowan County baseball, was gravely ill in a Charlotte hospital following a heart attack.
DeHart has been inducted into the Salisbury-Rowan (2009) and American Legion (2001) halls of fame.
He was Catawba’s head coach from 1986-89 and had a record of 72-49.
He coached the Rowan County American Legion team for 11 seasons and had a 368-120-1 record that included a state title in 1993 and a regional championship and World Series trip in 1996.

Rowan County hosts Kannapolis at Newman Park tonight in a rematch. Rowan rolled 11-2 at Kannapolis on Saturday.
Coming off a Saturday win at Concord, Southern Rowan plays at home tonight against a Stanly team that is tied with Rowan for first place in the Southeast Division with a 3-0 record.
• The Mooresville Moors won 7-4 against the Mooresville Legends on Saturday.
Sam Marshall and Josh Lam berth had two hits each for the Moors. Jon Stires pitched into the seventh for the win.
Devon Watts had two hits for the Legends, who got good pitching from Jack Kolls.

West Rowan Junior Legion split with South Rowan on Saturday. Micah Marsh got the win in a 4-3 West victory in a division game.
South won the second game 4-0.

West plays at Rowan County on Monday.
• Rowan Junior Legion beat Carson 6-5 on Saturday.
Harrison Smith got the win for Rowan. Dustin Ritchie and Joseph Peeler led the offense.
Rowan is at South Iredell tonight.

The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 6-5 at Augusta on Saturday.
Eric Grabe and Mike Marjama had three hits each for the Intimidators.

The West Rowan Athletic Boosters are accepting renewals for reserved football seating.
Last season’s seat-holders need to contact Jim or Melanie Haire at jimhaire4@gmail.com or 704-202-5628 after 7 p.m. to reserve seats for this fall.
Pricing is the same as last season.
The deadline for renewals is July 27.
Beginning Aug. 1, any remaining seats will be made open to the public.

The North Rowan Boosters will meet on Monday, July 8, at 6 p.m., in the school auditorium.

High-scoring guard Nate Jones is heading to a high-scoring team.
The 2012 Davie County graduate has signed with Matt Ridge and Davidson County Community College.
The combo guard was a prolific scorer for coach Mike Absher at Davie, averaging 23 points and five assists for a team that made the 4A state semifinals.
He was the Central Piedmont Conference Player of the Year and was selected to play in the East-West All-Star Game. He went to Wallace State Community College in Alabama for a season before resurfacing at DCCC.
“Nate is used to winning,” said Ridge, who has turned DCCC into a junior-college power. “He has extremely high expectations for himself. He could be one of the best players to ever wear Storm Blue. I think our fans are going to enjoy watching Nate compete.”
There is a new generation of Earnhardt, and it’s Karsyn Elledge, the 12-year-old niece of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and rising star in the Mini Outlaws Series.
Elledge is competing in 23 races in North Carolina and California this year in the No. 3 Sandy Cheeks Mini Outlaws kart sponsored by Nickelodeon.

Camp and all-star game

Donte Minter, a former West Rowan standout who played college basketball at Virginia and Appalachian State and a number of seasons overseas, is hosting a Basketball Skills Academy at Salisbury’s J.F. Hurley YMCA on June 24-27.
The camp will be from 9-2 daily and is for grades 2-12. The cost is $65. Instructors will include Bryan McCullough, Shayla Fields and Dadrian Cuthbertson.
Minter also will participate in an all-star game at 7 p.m. on June 27 at North Rowan High that will include a number of players with pro experience. Miller has commitments from McCullough, Carlos Dixon, Shamari Spears, Kellen Brand and Donald Sims, among others.
Admission is $5 for the all-star game.
