Southern Rowan’s American Legion team lost 6-1 to Randolph County at McCrary Park on Thursday.
Connor Bridges homered for Southern Rowan. Dylan Carpenter had three hits.
Tyler Sides was the starting pitcher and took the loss, although he kept SR (9-7) in the game a long time.
Randolph improved to 15-3 behind the strong pitching of Easton Welch. Welch went seven innings, struck out 12 and allowed four hits.
Dylan Prevatte homered for Randolph, which avenged an ugly 15-10 loss to a short-handed SR team earlier this month.
• Kannapolis lost to Stanly 13-2 in seven innings in a league game on Thursday.

Livingstone’s Quanera Hayes ran 53.90 in a 400-meter preliminary in the USA Track and Field Championships and finished 19th.
Francena McCorory had the best time (51.38).

• Rowan County Junior Legion lost 4-2 in nine innings to South Rowan on Wednesday. Jeremy Simpson had two hits for Rowan. Alex Hamilton took his first loss of the season.
Rowan won 4-2 against South Iredell on Thursday. John Owen got the win. Scott Sapp had three hits.
Rowan will play at Carson on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Kannapolis lost 6-4 to Lake Norman on Thursday to fall to 8-7 overall and 2-2 in league play.

The NCHSAA released a list of 100 “coaches to remember” as part of its centennial celebration.
• Robert Steele is on the list. Steele won six conference track championships at Oxford Webb and is credited with 15 NCHSAA state championships at North Rowan. Steel’s North teams won five straight titles from 1994-98.
• Former Catawba coach Pete Stout is on the list. Stout had a tremendous prep coaching record at Altamahaw, Western Alamance, Salisbury, Burlington Williams and Morganton Freedom.
Stout’s overall record of 234-63-14 included two 3A NCHSAA championships. Stout’s Salisbury teams were 83-20-10, won WNCHSAA titles in 1973 and 1974 and shared the 1971 WNCHSAA title.
China Grove native Frank Barger is on the list. He had a 273-120-5 coaching record at Hickory, coached four sports and is credited with 625 victories and 29 conference championships.
• Bruce Hardin in on the list. Hardin coached football 3A state champions at A.L. Brown in 1989 and 1997 and coached three other state runner-up teams.
• Former Livingstone men’s basketball coach Charles McCullough is on the list for his work at West Charlotte, where he coached 33 years. He coached 575 victories, 20 conference titles and five state championship teams.
• Catawba graduate, star athlete and coach Ray Oxendine is on the list for his work as a teacher, coach and administrator at a number of schools.
• Among other notables on the list of 100 are Albemarle football coach Toby Webb (103-18-6 at the helm of the Bulldogs), South Iredell wrestling and football coach Bill Mayhew, North Davidson softball coach Mike Lambros, and North Meck basketball coach LeRoy Holden, who coached Mike Gurley in high school.

John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown, Catawba) was named Coastal Plain League Co-Pitcher of the Week.
Tuttle, a rising senior at Catawba, pitched a one-hitter with seven strikeouts. He’s 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA.
Carson rising senior Colton Laws will pitch in the State Games today at UNC Charlotte at 4 p.m.

Hunter Harvey, a Bandys graduate who played with the Mooresville Moors American Legion team, has signed with the Baltimore Orioles.
Harvey, the 22nd pick of the first round, signed fora bonus of $1,947,600.
Harvey signed for the recommended “slot” bonus for his draft position, and if he passs a physical, he’ll join Baltimore’s organization.
Harvey pitched 54 2/3 innings for Bandys as a senior and went 8-0 with an ERA of 0.38.

Chicago White Sox shortstop prospect Tim Anderson, a first-round pick earlier this month, has joined the Kannapolis Intimidators for the second half of the South Atlantic League season.
He batted .495 in junior college.
• Kannapolis lost 5-1 at Augusta on Thursday to open the second half. Micah Johnson homered for the Intimidators. The four-game series continues tonight.

West Rowan rising senior Jake Kennedy lost 5 and 4 to Durham’s McKenzie Barringer in the round of 16 in the N.C. Junior Boys Championship in Cary.
•In a Women’s Golf Association Handicap Tournament at the Country Club of Salisbury, Susan Morris shot 89 to win low gross.
Low net winner was Jo Shaw (69). She was followed by Kathy Carlton (73) and Cindy Carmazzi (73).
• In the eGolf Tour’s Mimosa Hills Open in Morganton, Frank Adams III shot 1-over for two rounds and didn’t make the cut. The cutline fell at 2-under.

The Hurley YMCA Warriors competed at the Jim Law invitational in Charlotte. Top-three finishers received medals, while places 4-6 received ribbons.

Next the Hurley YMCA Warriors will compete in the USATF Nationals in Greensboro and in the IC Speed invitational track meet at Lake Norman.

Catawba outside hitter Kaitlyn Whitmer and libero Jenny Young were named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association College Division All-State team. Both were first-team picks.
Whitmer was 10th nationally in kills per set. Young was third nationally in digs per set.

A soccer camp will be held at South Rowan on July 8-11 for rising K-8th grade boys and girls.
