CHARLOTTE — Tomorrow evening, June 14, Charlotte Folk Society concludes their 30th anniversary season celebration with 26-year-old Elizabeth LaPrelle, master of the art of unaccompanied traditional Appalachian ballad singing, at The Great Aunt Stella Center, 926 Elizabeth Ave., Uptown.
LaPrelle is exceptional in her devotion to and mastery of the ancient art of Appalachian unaccompanied singing. She brings the old mountain ballads and songs to life.
Anyone can learn the old ballads but LaPrelle is able to capture the rhythm, the intensity, the breaks and sighs, that make this style of singing authentic.
With her old-time band, The Fruit Dodgers, she will perform ballads, songs, and traditional southern harmonies, with the addition of old-time tunes accompanied by banjo, guitar, and fiddle.
LaPrelle is an award-winning traditional singer and banjo player who has appeared on Prairie Home Companion, been interviewed and profiled on NPR, performed in concert all over the country and on the East and West Coasts as part of the Music From the Crooked Road Tour.
CFS gatherings are family-friendly and free; refreshments, song circle, jam sessions follow the hour-long concert; visitors are welcome to join in or simply listen. CONCORD — The Grateful Dead is back for the third annual “Grateful Dead Meet Up at the Movies 2013” on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 7:30 p.m. This year’s Meet Up features “Sunshine Daydream,” the most requested release of the band’s entire career. Originally shot on 16mm film on the grounds of the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta, Oregon in 1972—and painstakingly restored to HD resolution—“Sunshine Daydream” captures the band at the height of their powers. With the Dead lending their services to the Kesey family to help keep their Springfield Creamery afloat, this colorful counterculture time capsule features special appearances by key members of the Grateful Dead community and a cavalcade of Merry Pranksters.

CONCORD — The Sundae Art Gallery will open Friday, June 14, with a reception from 6-9 p.m.
The idea developed from discussions between Peter Brown and Cabarrus Creamery owner Hunter Huss, who believes in enhancing the sense of community and the quality of life downtown. There is a history of art in the space, and art and artisan ice cream were a natural fit — so the Sundae Art Gallery will open above the Cabarrus Creamery, 21 S. Union Street, Concord, with the kickoff of their “Second Fridays” series next Friday, June 14. The first group show is entitled “Eight ways from Sundae” featuring eight artists graduates plus their instructors from the Artist in Residence program of Braitman Studios in Charlotte. The gallery plans to host new art events the Second Friday of each month.
