Local residents and businesses experiencing Sprint signal problems

SALISBURY — Many local residents who use Sprint have been having trouble this week with their cell phone service, but a company representative said repairs are being made and should be completed this weekend.
Sprint subscribers have been experiencing problems such as dropped calls, low reception or no service at all. For the past week, dozens of people have heard from someone who said they tried to reached them by cell phone, but got a recorded message instead saying the number isn’t in service.
A company representative said Friday that’s because four local towers area are in need of repair, and three of those are near downtown Salisbury. The representative didn’t specify where those towers are located and how broad an area they serve.
The representative said those repairs should be finished sometime Sunday.
The Sprint representative said the fact that the towers have been ticketed for repair means that a large number of customers are having problems. If it was just a few, those issues would be resolved individually.
John Taylor, a senior manager of public affairs at Sprint Nextel Corp., wasn’t aware of the local reception issues but noted that the entire Sprint network is undergoing a billion-dollar overhaul to provide a faster network, and he said that work could be the reason for the recent problems.
