Rowan County played a near-flawless game in whipping Cherryville 8-0 on Saturday at Newman Park, but Post 100 rebounded from Saturday’s brutal defensive performance to edge Rowan 7-6 at Cherryville’s Fraley Field on Sunday.
Cherryville (1-3) picked up its first win for coach Bobby Reynolds, who is in his 26th season.
Rowan, which used Clint Veal, Brandon White and Travis Holshouser on the mound, fell to 6-4.
The game was halted for 45 minutes in the ninth inning due to lightning.
It was a see-saw struggle. Chance Bowden led Rowan’s efforts. Bowden hit a two-run homer, his first of the season, with Brian Bauk aboard, to tie the game at 2-all.
Rowan picked up two runs on a throwing error on Bauk’s bunt, and Bowden singled in Bauk to give Rowan a 5-4 lead.
Dillon Harris’ two-run homer put Cherryville back on top, and Post 100 took a 7-5 lead to the ninth.
Bauk drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-6 before lightning halted play with one out and the tying run at first base.
When play resumed, Cherryville was able to retire Bowden and Riley Myers to end the contest.
Relief pitcher Josh Beam, a Tusuclum signee, keyed Cherryville’s victory.
